    The War Memorial of Korea in Seoul’s Itaewon district commemorates the history of the Korean War (1950 - 1953), housing thousands of war memorabilia, maps, paintings, military equipment, battle records, and memorial statues. Divided into six indoor exhibition halls within the building, as well as a virtual combat experience room, and an outdoor exhibition centre, this museum is hailed as the largest of its kind in the world.

    A must-visit for history buffs, The Korean War Exhibition comprises of three halls that details the background of the Korean War, the progression of the war and how a truce was eventually established. Visitors can view black-and-white documentary footage (with English commentary) of the main battles and events of the Korean War as well as displays of over 20,000 artefacts and military equipment.

  • Other prominent exhibitions in The War Memorial of Korea include The Memorial Hall, which honours the memory of fallen patriots with intricate sculptures, reliefs, and wall paintings, as well as the Outdoor Exhibition, where full-scale models of armoured vehicles, tanks, field artillery, aircraft, warships, and submarines that were used in World War II, Korean War, and Vietnam War, are displayed.

    Every Friday at 14:00 between the months of April and June, October and November, The War Memorial of Korea hosts military musical performances, traditional martial arts, and marching parades by all-female honour guards at The Peace Plaza. If you’re looking to learn more about the Korean War, head over to the onsite bookstore where you can purchase ample reading materials and military-inspired souvenirs at affordable prices.

    A 10-minute walk from Namyeong Station (Seoul Subway Line 1, Exit 1), The War Memorial of Korea is open six days a week (closed on Mondays) from 9:00 till 18:00 and entrance is free of charge. Due to its massive size, exploring the entire museum takes two to three hours.
