Best time to go

Daegu has four distinct seasons just like the rest of Korea. However, as it is surrounded by mountains and is in a basin, it tends to get hotter than the rest of Korea during summer as the mountains around the basin trap humid and hot air. Daegu also witnesses heavy rains during summer between June and September making this period humid as well as being hot. The hottest period in Daegu is from July to August. To sum up, summer is definitely a season you should avoid if planning a trip to Daegu.

Daegu's peculiar geographical location also affects the rest of the seasons in the city. For example, winters here are quite cold, therefore, if you're a winter sports enthusiast, January is the coldest and the best time to visit. The winter season in Daegu is chock full of activities that you won't find in any other season around here.

For those who aren't interested in winter sports, however, the best time to visit is Autumn -- September to November -- when you can enjoy the weather and witness the fall colours in their full glory. April is also a good time to visit as you get to visit the very popular Cherry Blossom Festival in addition to enjoying the pleasant weather conditions of that month.

Getting around Daegu

There are different transportation options available for tourists visiting Daegu. You can either travel by bus, car, or subways depending on the destination you want to visit.

Daegu has an extensive bus system that connects all the major tourist destinations. There are two types of buses that ply across Daegu namely the limited buses and the local buses. Buses are available from 05.30 to 23.00, and they have numbered routes that make them easy to identify. There are different city tour buses too that connect most of the tourist destinations in the city.

Taxis too are inexpensive and easy to find in Daegu. There are four types of taxi systems currently available. The corporate taxis are the most common and can be easily found at most spots. These taxis are identifiable by a blue light on the taxi’s roof. The personal taxis are owned by individuals can be identified by a green light on the roof. Call taxis are also available and can be used in areas that are not easily accessible via public transport. However, you will have to pay an additional fee for these cabs. Apart from these taxis, tourists can also hail Hanmaeun Call taxis, which offer very high quality taxi services.

Daegu has a subway system with two lines covering most of the destinations in the city. However, these subways do not go to all the major tourist destinations. The stations are tourist friendly, announcements are made in English as well, and the destinations are also marked clearly in English. You can purchase a transportation card at newspaper stands and subway stations, making it a very convenient as well as a cost-effective travel option.

Good to know, tips

Daegu is a safe city at any time of the day. Tap water available throughout the city is also safe, however, it is best if you choose the places you eat with caution, especially while having street food. As most of the ATM machines shut down at midnight, make sure that you have withdrawn enough cash if you plan on enjoying the vibrant nightlife. There are, however, some ATMs in public areas that are open 24 hours, so make sure you have these places identified before you venture out to party. If you want to access the internet and do not plan on taking your laptop, your best option is the PC ‘bahngs’ in the city. You can also access the internet and for free in Daegu Duryu Park.
