Gyeongju, earlier known as Kyongju, is a coastal city in the province of North Gyeongsang in South Korea, and is a popular destination owing to the numerous historical sites present here. Yeongcheon and Cheongdo lie to the west, Pohang to the north and Ulsan to the south, and the Sea of Japan to the east.
Gyeongju is also referred to as the ‘Museum without walls’ due to the presence of many cultural properties as well as archeological sites here in the city. Some of the major historical sites such as Bulguksa Temple, Seokguram Grotto, Yangdong Folk village, and other Gyeongju Historic areas have also been voted as World Heritage Sites by UNESCO.
Owing to the cultural and historic attractions in the city, tourism is a thriving industry here with domestic as well as foreign travelers frequenting the city every year. In order to accommodate these tourists, there are a number of resorts as well as theme parks that have come up throughout the city where people can relax and rejuvenate.
While Gyeongju is not as large or developed as Seoul, you do need to ensure that you plan in advance and narrow down on the places you want to visit beforehand so that you can fully experience all the charms of Gyeongju and make the most out of your trip.
