Hongdae District

Shopping Area in Seoul

Hongdae District is a fashion-forward neighbourhood in Seoul that’s known for its bright and youthful ambience, underground cultures, and freedom of self-expression. Like most places in Seoul, the fastest way to get to Hongdae District is via subway; take the Seoul Subway Line 2 and alight at Hongik University Station (Exit 9).
Well-frequented by local youths and students of the neighbouring Hongik Art University, it is home to plenty of fashion outlets and independent boutiques that stay open until midnight, where visitors can shop for an array of merchandise ranging from handmade clothes to luxury goods.

Sangsang Madang is a prominent shopping mall in Hongdae, offering seven floors of clothing, crafts and accessories by local designers, an exhibition space, art gallery, and restaurants that overlook the vibrant neighbourhood. Meanwhile, the four basement levels houses a cinema where you can watch independent films from Korea and abroad as well as a live performance hall that regularly hosts music, dance and theatre performances.

Hongdae District’s main draw is its weekend ‘Free Market’ at Hongik Children's Park, where local artists and crafters showcase their handmade crafts, accessories, stationary, paintings, and music CDs from 13:00 till 18:00. On the second Saturday of every month, another interesting flea market is held at the Table Art, where you can attend workshops on floral arrangements and pottery-making at affordable prices.

A must-visit for bibliophiles is the Seoul Wow Book Festival, which takes place every October. Do note that novels, comics, and poems available for sale here are in Korean, but you can still enjoy numerous live concerts and book exhibitions at this unique event.
Not only is Hongdae District a fascinating place to purchase one-of-a-kind items, there are several streets dedicated to Seoul’s modern arts, clubbing and dining scene, where quaint cafes, art galleries, street stalls, jazz cafes, music dabang (vintage coffeehouses), cocktail lounges, wine bars, dance clubs, and gourmet eateries can also be found in almost every corner.
